Need motivation and inspiration to reach your goals this New Year? Here are 5 Essential Steps to Reach Your Goals (once and for all!).
The holidays begin and suddenly the advertisements about the resolutions and goals to be met also begin. I want to start by saying that you don’t have to change anything this new year, there is no requirement to set goals or create new versions of yourself. But, if that is what you really want, I can help you create systems that are the basis for achieving the goals you set for yourself.
You are going to read about some of the essential steps to reach your goals, desires, and purposes. It doesn’t matter if your goals are related to exercise, weight, productivity, or healthy eating, this will help you a lot.
After reading this list, you are going to be confident and ready to start setting your goals and resolutions and planning the celebration for your success.
This post is all about the Essential Steps to Reach your Goals.
1. Reflect about your life before setting goals
One of the first steps you should complete when creating goals is reflection. We often tend to follow trendy goals, such as “go to the gym or reach 10,000 daily steps” without even analyzing the value of these goals for our lives. So, what do I mean by reflection? Ask yourself who you are and who you want to become. It looked so simple, but these questions can be tough to answer if you’re sincere. Conscious or unconscious, we tend to ignore this part because it can make us feel stuck, frustrated, lost, or bring up some deep issues. But this part is essential to set valuable and reachable goals.
For this step, I usually try to be in a relaxed state of mind and ask myself things such as: What is making me feel good right now? What habits make me feel drained? What memories do I cherish the most? When, where, or with whom I feel like myself? You just have to start asking questions from a place of love and curiosity. This could be overwhelming, but also it can be life-changing. Remember to be kind to yourself in this process and don’t forget that you don’t have to have all figure it out. If you want to deep dive into this matter, I truly recommend checking on “The Human Being Journal”. It’s a guided journal that will help you with the process of exploring and knowing yourself to set and reach your goals.
2. Set clear and achievable goals
How many of your past New Year resolutions sound like “I want to be happier, better, and healthier”? And suddenly, is July and you don’t even remember which goal you had? I’ve been there and it can be very frustrating. Besides, it can be counterproductive when you don’t set clear and achievable goals because in the meantime you can feel that what you are doing it’s never enough. To prevent this from happening, you have to write and describe in detail what is your purpose and what to expect from yourself, namely, what exactly you have to do to complete it.
For example, if one of your goals is to be skinny, this can be too ambiguous. You can rephrase it as “I’m going to move my body at least three times a week and I am going to eat just when hungry and stop when full”. This is just an example, remember all bodies are different and our goals have to be aligned with our lifestyle.
3. Practice self-compassion when struggling to reach your goals
Most people tend to stop when fail, and this is one of the main mistakes when trying to accomplish goals. But why self-compassion is so important? Being self-compassionate means to realize and accept that we are not perfect, and even more, that we don’t have to be impeccable for success. You must have heard that “healing is not linear”, and is no lie. Being harsh and mean when “failing” is just going to fill you with disappointment and guilt, making you continue failing. On the other hand, being self-compassionate and understanding when “failing” will help you to overcome the situation and continue toward your goals.
If you feel that you will benefit from being more compassionate and less perfect I highly recommend the book The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown. The book will take you on an amazing journey about authenticity, self-compassion, resilience, gratitude, and much more.
4. create social networks
If you are like me, you must prefer to go unnoticed when trying something new, and that’s okay! But sometimes we have to share our goals with someone else so they can make us accountable. When it comes to setting goals is extremely beneficial to have a company. Get involved with people with the same mindset and aspirations as you. For example, if your resolution is to exercise more, invite friends to your workouts, or try a new sport where you can meet new friends with similar interests. Also, a great way to be accountable to someone else is to do challenges. Create a goal, a due date, and a reward to the winner. Is a fun way to motivate and accomplish what you want!
5. Visualize your goals
Sometimes, the goals and desires are inconclusive, and visualizing them is a great way to make them real. How many times have you said that you want something but in reality, you can’t even describe it. Visualizing your goals implies knowing exactly how to be the best version of yourself. Making it real and concrete is one of the first steps to believe you can accomplish your goals. One of my favorite ways to do this is with a vision board. Take your time and go to Pinterest (or even your Camera roll) and start to put together pictures that inspire and define your future self. If you prefer to do it manually, here is a Vision Board Kit where you can cut and paste from a variety of incredible pictures and create your own vision poster.
And finally…
I hope you enjoy reading these 5 essential steps for reaching your goals. Never stop trying and never give up. Remember that the journey is not always perfect and happy, it can also be frustrating and overwhelming. Is what you do when things get complicated, what is going to define the final results. I believe in you!
